Why do people come to therapy?
+
People come to therapy for many different reasons. Some are experiencing anxiety, low mood, stress, trauma, or difficulties regulating their emotions. Others are navigating life transitions, relationship challenges, perfectionism, self-esteem concerns, or simply feeling stuck.
You don't need to be in crisis or have a diagnosis to benefit from therapy. Many people seek support because they want to better understand themselves, build healthier coping strategies, or make meaningful changes in their lives.
What can I expect in my first session?
+
The first session is about getting to know you. We'll talk about what's brought you to therapy, what's been happening in your life, and what you are hoping to get out of our work together.
It's also an opportunity for you to ask questions and decide whether I feel like the right psychologist for you. By the end of the session, we'll have a clearer understanding of your goals and begin planning the most appropriate approach moving forward.
How many sessions will I need?
+
There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. The number of sessions depends on your goals, the concerns you're working through, and how therapy progresses.
Some people notice meaningful improvements within a handful of sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll regularly review your progress together and adjust our plan as your needs change.
How often should I attend?
+
For most people, I recommend starting with weekly or fortnightly appointments. This helps build momentum and allows us to develop skills and strategies consistently.
As you begin to feel more confident, sessions can often be spaced further apart to support ongoing progress and independence.
What if we're not the right fit?
+
Feeling comfortable with your psychologist is one of the most important parts of successful therapy.
If at any stage you feel that I am not the right fit for you, I encourage you to let me know. Finding the right therapist is a personal decision, and I am always happy to help you explore other options if someone else may better meet your needs.
Is what I say confidential?
+
Yes. Everything you share in therapy is kept confidential and treated with the utmost respect.
There are a small number of situations where I may be legally or ethically required to share information, such as if there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, or where required by law.
Confidentiality will be discussed in detail during your first session so you understand how your information is managed.
Do I need a Mental Health Care Plan?
+
No. You are welcome to book an appointment without a Mental Health Care Plan.
If you would like to claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a Mental Health Care Plan and referral from your GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician before your appointment. See the
Fees & Rebates page for more detail on Medicare rebate amounts.
Do you work with parents?
+
Yes. Alongside working directly with adolescents and young adults, I provide child-focused parent consultations to support parents and caregivers to better understand their child's emotional and behavioural needs.
Together, we can explore practical strategies to strengthen relationships and support wellbeing.
